Review: This is my favorite camera -- have used about 20 other cameras - The P1100 is a mirrorless camera with all of the main controls you will find on an interchangeable lens camera. It shoots both RAW and JPEG. It is very good shooting in AUTO mode, but also allows manually controlling aperture and shutter speed and ISO and white balance. Also the P1100 menu system lets you choose spot focus, wide focus. Also offers pretty good manual focusing using a nice fat ring. Also offers focus peaking, and display of histogram to detect whether part of your photo is too dark or too light. Also has the best control of exposure compensation of any camera I have ever used, including three pro level cameras, two by Sony, one by Canon. And allows you to use exposure compensation while shooting in AUTO, which is sadly lacking in my high end Sony. Let me briefly explain exposure compensation if you've never used it, because it can be very very useful. The camera automation will have its own idea of how to achieve proper exposure. The exposure compensation control allows you to look at other alternative exposures, which are often better than the camera's choice. For example, if you are taking a photo of a very dark subject, your camera automation may expose for the entire scene, leaving the dark subject so poorly lit that you cannot see detail. With exposure compensation, you can increase the amount of light on the subject and show the detail clearly. I find the P1100 does very well shooting on AUTO, but you can adjust shutter or aperture or ISO to your tastes. As someone who has also owned a high end full frame camera (Sony A7RM4) and a high end crop sensor camera (Canon 7D mark 2) I can say this camera delivers absolutely sharp photos while outdoors in good light, either landscapes or wildlife, with one exception. Not good for flying birds or very fast moving subjects. For flying birds my Sony A7 and Canon 7D are way superior because they focus very fast. But they cost about five times as much. You can take photos indoors, but I find my iPhone 13 works better indoors, and has the advantage of ultra wide angle, going to maximum wide angle of 13mm. . But not half as well outdoors. I started out with a Nikon P900, liked it, got a Nikon P1000 in 2019, that is almost identical to the P1100. I only bought the P1100 just in case my P1000 stops working. But now am shooting just with the P1100, leaving the P1000 as backup. Why I love the P1100/P1000. In reasonably good daylight (before dusk) this camera delivers excellent picture quality. It is absolutely fabulous for wildlife, because it is very lightweight when compared with interchangeable lens cameras using long telephoto lens. It will capture photos of distant subjects that a professional full frame cannot, because that ultra long lens at 3000mm can capture sharp closeups where a pro camera with a horribly 200-600mm zoom levels will struggle, even with a 2x extender. Perhaps a bit less dynamic range than my Sony A7 that costs 5 times as much, but equally sharp. I attach a few photos of an osprey at 3000mm and a closeup of a tiny frog barely visible to the naked eye at a distance of about 200 feet. Long telephoto is not just for distant subjects. It can also be for very small subjects that are quite close. Another great feature is the exposure compensation control located on the lens barrel rather than on the body of the camera so you can get exactly the right exposure without taking your eye away from the viewfinder. Personally I use the P1100 with an LCD monitor costing around $30 that covers the LCD with a giant eyecup that excludes daylight, as shown in the attached photo of my P1100 on a tripod.
Review: Excellent for bird ID and some beautiful pics as a bonus. - Perfect birding companion. So far, exclusively used in bird mode and find it’s easy and quick to get good pics for confirming sightings later and often wind up with a beautiful shot, especially in good light. Bought a bigger, more ergonomic strap and can carry it and my binoculars, with no problem. The zoom reach is insane and plenty stable, hand held for me. First Merlin pic was from pretty close in good, low evening light. Second was from very far away and overcast but plenty good to get a positive ID. Also snapped an Osprey just as it started to move, so you can get in focus action but best to have the stationary bird in focus first. Exceeded my expectations for the price, amazing tech that’s fun to use.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good for the cost, but not great.
*by J***L on December 26, 2025*

I took it out for a trial run yesterday. It was afternoon and sunny, though overcast. I immediately put a UV lens for protection and a shoe for a tripod. I looked at all the photos on my computer and was a bit worried about the picture quality. I really thought I would need to send it back. Then I decided to print some of the pictures. I chose the two I thought were the best quality. The 5 by 7 were good. One I printed 8 by 10 one lost detail (prob a focus issue) but the other still looked fairly sharp. My concern was the 11 by 17. I was prepared to be disappointed, but it looked amazingly good, not pro quality, but sharp enough the I could see good details. My eyes didn't feel like I was looking at something out of focus. I still have a lot to learn about this camera. Getting it to focus on exactly what I wanted focused, may take some time while I learn more about the camera and all of its functions. My initial thoughts are that this camera is good, not great (great would cost me upwards of $5,000.00 or more). At really high lens zoom the sharpness does suffer. Don't bother with the digital zoom, it is useless. You will certainly want a good sturdy tripod. Don't skimp here. At high zoom you won't be able to hold the camera still enough to take a decent photo. Weight: on the heavy side (it was too heavy for my tripod to hold it in the place I set it) Auto focus: fair (my phone camera is better) Value: Okay. Ease of use: There is a learning curve. Manuals for all features are on-line. Not my favorite way to access the info.
