There are two containers on the backside that take two diesel batteries each. There is also a compartment for a single AA battery which actually helps to get the radio frequency started once you insert the battery. We needed a clock out on our deck, but we didn't want one that dominates, forcing us to know what time it is. This clock stays in the background, unnoticed except when we want to know the time. We like the illuminated face. It's very attractive, but without demanding attention. The size is perfect - it's large enough to see from across the deck, but not oversized. The numbers are also large, making it easily readable. We're glad it's an atomic clock that checks in every couple hours to make sure it's still accurate.
