Review: it has a good point, feels nice has Faber Castell written on ... - Having been gifted a 36 tin of watercolour pencils that are an own make from a department store about 18 months ago, and having played about with them only once I decided watercolour paint was the way to go. However, having recently watched a video on watercolour pencils with watercolour paints I had a change of mind and decided after some research that number one brand was the Caran D'ache museum, number two was Faber Castell Albrecht Durer, and three was Derwent Inktense ( which I have done a review on). The Faber Castell pencils comes in a dark green, fairly solid cardboard container which is covered in a mock leather, with magnetic closure, the picture shown is the actual sleeve. The pencils are hexagonal, the name of the colour is clearly shown along with the lightfast star rating which is a must if using with watercolour paint. A free synthetic brush was included with this set, it has a good point, feels nice has Faber Castell written on the side, and compared to my Cotman synthetics is somewhat stiffer, I mention this as I now tend to use sable brushes for painting and after having researched was under the impression that you needed a stiffer brush, this is just not true with these pencils, there is no extra rubbing, sable brushes work just the same as synthetic, but it is nice that Faber Castell include a brush, especially if you are just starting out. I have tried the pencils out on different types of watercolour paper, hot pressed, not and rough and they have worked as they should. I have used the pencils directly onto paper then washed, I have also used a wet brush on the nib as you would pans and they have worked perfectly. The 36 colours are as what you would expect, there are a number of red tones, but you can actually see this on the sleeve, so this was no surprise. The pencils are not soft and waxy, they are solid but not hard just slightly dry, and because of this I suspect that they could be used to colour in without water. The colours are vibrant, they mix extremely well to produce other colours. As with watercolour paint I would recommend artist quality is advised when purchasing watercolour pencils not just for the vibrancy of the colours but in the way they react when wet and overall transparency. I am really pleased with these and would recommend.
Review: These are indeed beautiful pencils. - I wanted to purchase a quality set of watercolour pencils so decided to buy a few smaller packs to try some out. I bought a set of 12 of these. I wasn't expecting to like them as I got the silver/gold/bronze polychromos and hated them, they were hard as hell, unblendable and the only colour that looks good is the silver. So much hype over Faber Castell, I thought. Until I opened my little 12 set. They were last in line to be tried in a few other brands I'd got to sample. My precious. They are beautiful. Had I not been awash with watercolour pencils from all my sampling, I'd have gone straight ahead and bought the 120 tin. However, I couldn't justify the expenditure when I saw this beautiful gift box of 36 for such a bargain price. They are beautifully presented in a lovely box with a quality brush (that holds a little too much water with use of these but fantastic with paints). They are hexagonal and fairly wide, so feel sturdy and comfortable to use. I fell in love from just dry use as they are a lovely, normal pencil. I became overly protective and possessive when I was what happens with the tiniest amount of water - gorgeous pigment release! I also got the 36 Koh-I-Noor Mondeluz to sample - at a third of the price of FC, they didn't break the bank. The pencils did break though and the colour range of the FC box is far better than the range of colours in the Mondeluz set. I also purchased a set of 6 Caran d'ache museum aquarelle. I prefer the FC Albrecht Durer. I should give the 12 box to my cousin, who also does colour pencil art and they are duplicated in the 36 set. Or sell them, recoup some of my expenditure. But I don't want to part with a single pencil. That's how good these are. I'm going to have to give the polychromo's a go. So long as there isn't any metallic ones in the set....

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Highly recommend
*by M***T on 30 July 2016*

I have wanted artist grade pencils for a long time. I had a small set of 12 of s other brand not the same as these, but had in mind one of two choices, these or prismacolour. I read reviews on amazon and on artists websites gleaning knowledge on each. After some time it became obvious to me that prismascoliyr was the way to go. When I received the package I hoped they arrived intact, and wasn't disappointed. The pencils are set out in groups of 10 in one row of three in two tiers, 60 pencils in total. I had hoped they'd be in colour wheel order but they weren't, that wasn't an issue I merely changed them to how I wanted them ordered. They were all nicely pointed and had the names etched clearly on the barrel of each pencil, with good range of each colour. I was impressed with how vivid the colours were and how well they blended with each other. These are oil not wax pencils and so I wasn't sure how they'd react. I had bought a blending pencil from a different make, but for initial colouring they worked well together blending with each other in the family colour groups. I tried with blending those from different colour groups and was happy with how they blended too. The nibs are sturdy and strong, not brittle at all so took a good session of colouring, with only one tip breaking a tiny piece off. This I feel was more down to that that pencil was slightly too pointed to a too fine tip but the breakage was minimal and didnt affect my use of it as was still a nice sharp point. None I used broke, all appear to be made with high quality in mind. All the wood looks clean and new duty no dry or cracked wood, no gaps, no imperfections. The colours are vivid and true. With such a decent range of each colour, it's possible to colour match with most things you will wish to draw and colour. Those that you don't have, will be easy to mix and blend from those in the palette. Highly recommend.
