They are simply slide on cleats. As you would wear playing football, or golf. **Q: Will the large fit over a size 10-1/2 hiking boot, or should I get the xtra large?** A: We bought these for my 30 + son who hikes a lot. I asked him your question. He said the large should be the size you’d need for a size 10 and a half boot. **Q: Would these be good for moss/algae covered river rocks and boat ramps?** A: They weren’t the greatest in snow. They’d slip off our shoes and the pegs would come off (lost quite a few) because they’re removable. Not sure how’s they’d do on rocks and ramps. I’d splurge on some good hiking shoes or water shoes with plenty of tread. That might be enough. **Q: Will these work on dirt trails without snow?** A: I believe they would work on dirt.
