## Description

Outsidepride 2 lb. Perennial, Nitrocoated, Inoculated Red Clover Seed

## Features

- Perennial red clover seeds are an important forage legume grown widely in the temperate regions throughout the U.S. Red clover is becoming increasingly important in the Deep South where it is used as a winter annual. It is also grown in many areas from bulk clover seeds in the Pacific Northwest and other regions of the U.S. It is considered to be a short-lived perennial clover, meaning it typically lasts 3 - 5 years; however, it will often persist beyond this due to self-seeding.
- Red clover has many uses including cover crops, food plots, pasture mixtures, hay, silage, and other uses which makes it the most widespread clover used today.
- Red clover is adapted to a wide range of climatic conditions, soil types, fertility levels, use patterns and management. It is easy to establish, red clover seeds establish vigorously and is a very good clover to fixate nitrogen out of the atmosphere and in to the soil. Red clover is relatively easy to remain free of disease and pests. For this reason, red clover has many uses and is often used as part of a crop rotation program.
- Red clover is often grown with cool season grasses, but can be grown alone or with certain warm season perennial grasses. It can be used for pasture, hay, or silage, and is an excellent soil improvement crop. When grown where it is well-adapted, the yield of red clover seed is usually higher than that of any other clover. It has a longer growing season than any other clover grown in the United States. Red clover is extremely attractive to insects and bumble bees are the main pollinator.
- Plant red clover seeds at 1/2 lb per 1,000 square feet or 8 to 16 lbs per acre. Ideal seeding depth is approximately 1/4 inch, but error on the side of being shallow rather than too deep. Good seed-soil contact helps ensure establishment. Most red clover is seeded in late winter to early spring in the northern and central parts of the red clover belt. Autumn plantings are preferred in the Lower South.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How tall does this grow? I live in Northern Utah, is this a good environment for this type of clover? Does it spread out on it's own, pervasive?**
A: The clover only grows a few inches tall, and yes it spreads on its own fairly well, but it is not invasive. If it gets into an area you don't want it, just keep it mowed or till it under and you can kill it back. Sorry but I don't know anything about the Southern Utah growing condition. My suggestion would be to check with your seed supplier and look for recommended growing zones.

**Q: Do you need to till the ground first?**
A: No, you do need to cover seed however. In most areas. Germination begins after a rain or with watering the soil over 75 degrees Fahrenheit. They can germinate in temperatures as low as 45'F but to safeguard against frosts, it is better to plant after dangers of frost. Water each day for 4 days if it has not rained recently. This offers adequate time for solid soil support and moisture for new roots. This variety blooms after about 45 days of growth. It will rebloom all summer especially if blooms are eaten off early on. Do not mow frequently. Plants can tolerate about two mowings a season. Reseed yearly as this species acts as an annual most times. It is a perennial in lower temporate regions.

**Q: Is this a medium or mammoth variety?**
A: This is a medium variety. It didn't do well last year because of the late season planting, but is coming up beautifully this spring.

**Q: How tall does the red clover get**
A: I have a red clover in the front that stands 2 ft. tall with a flower that's huge. I use this however in yard as grass so I mow it a lot. But just planted Crimson in native yard. They seem to get about a foot but their flowers are so soft!
