I plugged the vacuum in, and in a dimly lit room, faced the UV lights toward a wall (I didn't want to look at them), and pushed the two little wheels in (they're on either side of the UV light). There was a slight blue light that appeared on the wall. Released the wheels, and the light turned off. Once I could verify the UV lights did work, I grew more in love with this vacuum.
