They have a polymer tip to simulate the projectile portion of the cartridge so there's no chance of damage to your feed ramp or chamber during function testing. The body of the casing is made of what appears to be good quality metal (I don't know what type of metal, but it seems of good quality) with a softer insert in the primer portion of the cartridge which will protect your striker/firing pin. The weight of the trainer cartridges seems on par with typical loaded live cartridges, so they serve as a good analog for loading. The fact that they are colored a vibrant color helps identify them as a training aid and minimizes any confusion for live cartridges. In my experience, the trainer cartridges loaded well and cycled through the action with no difficulties.
