## Description

This updated, 19th edition of The Naval Institute Guide to the Ships and Aircraft of the U.S. Fleet meets the high expectations and exacting standards of those who rely on this volume to stay informed and to make related policy, force level, technological and weapons decisions related to the U.S. Navy. Packed with comprehensive information, up-to-date photographs, line drawings, and useful appendixes, this timely volume describes the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard during a period of intensive transformation while engaged in combat operations. In describing the Navy's “ships and aircraft,” extensive coverage is given to the new littoral combat ships (LCS), joint high-speed vessels (JHSV), Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers, and other new ships as well as developments in shipboard ballistic missile defense. At the same time, the convoluted path in surface combatant construction is “deciphered,” while the belated decision to cancel the Marine expeditionary fighting vehicle (EFV) is explained. Also addressed in detail is the new F-35 series Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) and other aviation programs. Similarly addressed are Navy personnel, Marine Corps issues, Coast Guard forces, marine mammals, unmanned underwater and aerial vehicles, and other aspects of U.S. naval forces. Continuing the longstanding tradition as the most complete resource of its kind, this updated 19th edition meets the high expectations and exacting standards of those who rely on this volume to stay informed in the field.

Review: THE ANSWERS TO SO MANY NAVAL REFERENCE QUESTIONS - NOTHING HERE IS STILL CLASSIFIED SO READ THIS EDITION TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT - JUST DON'T MAIL THEM OUT OF THE COUNTRY, IN A NUTSHELL: REAL DETAILS AND AN INVENTORY OF ORDNANCE TOO! Want to find out details about standard U.S. Naval defense systems? This is the book. Ideal for defense enthusiasts, analysts, historians and academic researchers, this volume has very hard to find data and info about virtually everything the U.S. Navy can float, submerge, haul, shoot, or fly. Frankly in most countries the material here would be restricted, and in fact there is warning in the inside cover that states that; this is to be "sold in the United States, Canada and American possessions only". A new edition comes out about 3 times per decade and includes everything but the latest, still classified, U.S. military hardware. STILL HERE -- OKAY THERE'S MORE: If you save the older issues, you will have a rather comprehensive chronicle of the nuts and bolts of the U.S. Navy - real interesting stuff. For instance, if you go back to say the thirteenth edition, you can find a full description of the Iowa Class Battleships and the compositions of a variety of their 16" projectiles. Want to know about the jets used in the Vietnam War? Look at the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th editions, and you'll find cool aircraft and helicopters as well as Crusiers that still fired artillery. Would you like to see and read about the add-on, stand-off weapons from the Gulf-War era. You'll find them in editions 13-16 listed under "WEAPONS SYSTEMS". How fast or far do our missles fly? How large a warhead do they carry and what type of guidance system do they use are all included for countless systems in each and every volume of this text. BOTTOM LINE: If this type of stuff is interesting too you, this text can take the place of counting sheep at night, as it does for me. The good news is that NOTHING IN THIS TEXT IS STILL CLASSIFIED SO YOU CAN READ THESE VOLUMES TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT - JUST DON'T MAIL THEM OUT OF THE COUNTRY.
Review: EXCELLENT HISTORY OF "SHIPS AND aIRCRAFT OF THE U.S. FLEET. - As in the past, Normal Polmar's copy's of "The Naval Institute Guide to Ships and Aircraft of the U.S. Fleet, updated 19th edition is superb. The history he forwards on to the public is incomparable in it's depth. This book, as well as his others like it is clear concise and filled with excellent information. Much research by Polmar is obvious. If anyone is interested in our ship's and aircraft in the U.S. do not hesitate to buy this book. I bought this edition to add to my husband's library. It was an excellent choice for his 80th birthday and points out all of the jobs he has had for the U.S. Navy. He loves this edition as it brings him up to date on what is and has been done to improve the fleet that defends our nation. Thank you, Norman Polmar, for all of your in-depth research and work. I highly recommend any and all editions of Polmar's books. Trish Schiesser

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Essential but dated
*by L***E on April 26, 2025*

This is an essential reference on the U.S. Navy. For many years, it was updated every several years and I would buy every updated volume. Unfortunately, the Naval Institute Press has not continued publication, and this edition is now woefully out of date with 2013 data. My original copy, bought in 2013, has so many pen & ink changes and additions that I bought this second copy to update.
