Otherwise you risk losing your pencil. Yes, the magnetic connection between the pencil and iPad is pretty strong, but not that strong. After having to dig through my backpack for my pencil a couple of times, I should have figured out that I needed something better to keep the pencil connected to the iPad. One day when I was walking home with just the iPad (and pencil), I noticed that the pencil wasn't attached when I got home.
