Review: I can hear....really hear...for the first time in years! - This is a long-winded review, but I hope it will help anyone "on the fence" about buying these hearing amplifiers (Ziv-201P) by Banglijian. They completely changed my life over the past few days, but I wasn't sure this would be the case. I owe the positive outcome to the kindness and patience of Kaven in Customer Service at Banglijian for helping me through the most emotional purchase of my life...because I can hear again...really hear, and this was no small feat! I have been hard of hearing for 10 years due to an accident, and over the past several years it has gotten progressively worse. I also have been treated for cancer (thankfully, I am in remission) and only recently learned that chemotherapy drugs (the same ones used on me) cause hearing loss. I have owned a consulting business for 20 years, and last year I had to abandon using my desktop phone because every voice on the other end sounded muffled. Now I exclusively use my cell phone with dangling earbuds, and that has its drawbacks. I broke three sets because they get caught on things. I can no longer hear anyone speak unless, (a) it is a man with a deep/well-projected voice who speaks clearly, or (b) someone is within inches of my face. I repeatedly need to say, "Pardon me; can you repeat that?" or, "I'm sorry; I missed that last part", or I look at people with a blank stare because I can't make out the words....at all. Not everyone is patient or understanding when someone cannot hear. Others need to spell out words or names (A as in apple; M as in Mary, etc.), or write them down on paper. There are three main types of hearing loss: (1) conductive hearing loss, where the problem lies in the middle ear (ear drum or ossicles), (2) sensorineural hearing loss, where there is damage in the inner ear (cochlea or hearing nerve); and (3) mixed hearing loss, where there is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. I had a professional hearing test a few weeks ago and was told I have a moderate to profound "mixed hearing loss" with an "air bone gap, which is the difference between the thresholds for hearing by air conduction and bone conduction. When I was hospitalized a year and a half ago, a nurse brought me a SuperEar 5000 by Sonic Technology. It was a hand-held hearing amplifier with an attached over-the-head headset that covered both ears. I was able to hear normal conversation, but I lost it after a few months, and I didn't like the headset. I purchased a replacement with earbuds, but I broke several sets of earbuds, because they got caught on doorknobs in the kitchen and bathroom. Also, it was not entirely convenient, because I needed to wear it everywhere I went, and it looked like I was always listening to music, even in restaurants. I decided to research behind-the-ear hearing amplifiers after being quoted $5,000-$6,000 by an audiologist for two regular hearing aids (insurance does not pay for hearing aids, and that is outside the realm of my budget). I spent not less than a dozen hours researching hearing amplifiers -- specifically rechargeable ones -- and spent the time reading many hundreds of reviews on desertcart.com, not only on Banglijian's products, but every other hearing amplifiers as well. The reviews for this product were better than similar products that looked the same. I am mechanically-challenged, so when these devices arrived and I saw all of the small pieces, I knew I would not be able to assemble them. I charged them up for several hours, and after the green lights came on (an indication the devices are charged), I called my next door neighbor. He came over to assemble them and even trimmed the clear tubes with cuticle scissors so they would perfectly fit inside my ear once the tips were on. The tips fit nice and snug (I used the middle size thin/narrow mushroom-like tip with the narrow plastic tube). They fit well, and I had no concern about the tip coming apart from the tube. I was not expecting what happened next! I put the first device on and asked my neighbor to say something. He did, and I am sure I was smiling from ear to ear. Then I put the other one on and was able to hear him speak from 5-6 feet away. It seemed as though I was in a different world. It was life changing. I was ecstatic....so much so that I and stayed up late to email friends of my delight that I could hear for the first time in years....really hear (properly). By Saturday morning, however, my glee turned into disappointment. I was planning to go out for breakfast and test my new devices at a restaurant, but I could not get the devices to simultaneously charge. The green lights did not come on. Finally, one charged but the other still had a blue light. I then switched USB cords, thinking one might be defective. Then the second device charged, but it had a high-pitched shrieking sound even with the tip fitting snuggly in my ear. Then the first one lost its charge. I resigned to thinking either both units were defective, or the USB charging cords were defective. On Sunday morning I woke up with enthusiasm to tackle the amplifiers again, but I had largely the same experience, so I put them back in their box and pondered what to do next. On Monday I needed to work, so I didn't do anything. On Tuesday morning, I awoke to find a kind follow up email from Kaven at Banglijian. He wanted to know how I was getting along with my new amplifiers. I explained my challenges and told him I would like to return the devices and receive a refund. I also told him how incredibly well they worked Friday evening. Writing that email to him was an emotional experience, because I went from hope to despair within three days time. The next morning I received another email from Kaven with a long list of tips on how to charge the devices, how not to over-charge, how to turn the devices on and off, how I could use the USB cables in my car if needed, how to properly insert the tips, what I needed to do to achieve the best results when charging them, etc. He had the confidence of an expert and taught me how to troubleshoot -- something I didn't believe I could do on my own. By mid-morning, both devices were evenly charged. His words were so encouraging that my spirits were lifted, and some of Kaven's confidence rubbed off on me. Today I wore the devices to dinner -- the first time I went out with them and after three days of believing I might have received duds. What really impacted me was Kaven's utter confidence that the devices would work, and he was right. He has a unique compassion and exchanged numerous emails with me. He also assured me about the extended return period and said I can return the devices if I was not happy. I hope this review helps someone, and if you are hesitating about buying the Ziv-201P or even the Ziv-201, I recommend reaching out to Kaven. Even if Banglijian did not have an extended warranty, I would not hesitate to buy these devices again, as the price is right, and the quality is there. It just takes a little hand-holding from different time zones ;) IMPORTANT: I have read comments by many people with hearing loss say how tinnitus (e.g., ringing in the ears, sounds of the ocean, clicking, etc.) affects their ability to wear hearing amplifiers or hearing aids because the tinnitus is amplified. I suffered from tinnitus for years and didn't know what caused it. Then I began reading every food label on every product and narrowed it down to three things: (1) Carrageenan, a food additive used in many baked goods and dairy products, (2) Palm Kernel Oil, also used in most baked goods and other sweets and snacks, and (3) diet soft drinks. After I eliminated those things from my diet entirely, I no longer suffer from tinnitus....at all, and haven't for at least the past two years.
Review: Awesome Product! - I actually purchased two devices. The first one I bought was the 201P and the second one was the 09C. My ears have different levels of hearing loss. I could never find an amplifier that worked for my right ear (more profound loss) so I got the 201P first and decided to try it out in my right ear. It was great! I could actually hear out of it. I can keep it set on program 1 and level 3 and hear fine. So I decided to go ahead and purchase another for my left ear, which isn't as bad. I was using a cheap $20 amplifier I had gotten from our local CVS store which was fine, I could at least hear with that in place, but it always amplified EVERY sound and the quality sounded really bad (after I now had a device working for my right ear that had good quality). It sounded tinny. Since my hearing loss in the left ear wasn't as profound as in my right ear, I decided to go for the next step down in decibels and went with the 09C instead. It works great too. I am not as thrilled with the layout of the buttons on it though. I tend to end up hitting the program button instead of the volume toggle many times. I also like how the on/off button of the 201P flashes blue/green when you turn it on and off to let you know it worked. When I take them out at night or put them in each morning, I need to do it under the light with my glasses on to see if I have the toggle for the on/off on the 09C in the correct position. I also like the slightly smaller size of the 201P. But that is a minor thing. I can keep 09C on program 1 and level 3 also and can hear perfectly with it. I did notice that sometimes the 09C seems to cut out and get really loud every so often when I go to adjust it. If I toggle the volume all the way down then up to level 3 again, it seems to correct it. I also noticed that the hard piece screwed onto the device that connects the tube to the earpiece (the thicker tube, not the thin ones) seems to turn and not stay tightly in position. The one on the 201P stays in place. Not sure if it is just made differently or if it is something I am doing when I insert/remove it and adjust it. Anyway, all this is to say that I am happy with my purchases and am hearing much better. Being able to hear in BOTH ears after so many years of only hearing out of one ear is awesome! I am so glad I decided to give the Banglijian devices a chance.
