They are over the ear. The cups absorb outside sound but not enough that would be considered "noise cancelling". They're mainly for DJ's, home, and professional studio producers who use them because electronic "Noise Cancelling" tech interferes with recordings. **Q: are these good for big heads? i have trouble finding headphones that fit comfortably over my big head. also i wear glasses if that helps** A: They grip my average size head fairly firmly. Not enough to hurt but a big head may have problems. I was able to bend mine a bit to lighten the grip **Q: How does this compare to the ATH-M30? And how comfortable is it for extended hours of use?** A: I can only respond to the 2nd part of your question as I have not tried the ATH-M30, but the ATH M20X was (for me) extremely uncomfortable even after using for only a short period of time. This was due to the, IMO, excessive heat build-up which literally caused pools of sweat to collect inside the earpieces. I returned the headset after a few days. **Q: Do these headphones come with a carrying case?** A: No, they don't come, but I suggest to buy a case just in case. I am reducing one point for repairability due to fixed cable. A detachable cable would be appreciated more.Since it is closed back and has snug fitting silicone earcups, passive noise cancellation is good. This takes us to the next point:While the fit is nice, the snugness can lead to discomfort due to heat build up. You will find yourself getting warm within 10-20 minutes of use. Just somethign to be mindful of. In Kanpur's moderate weather of March, I find the need to ventilate periodically to cool off the ears and wipe the prespiration from the cups to prevent damage to them. I think this is common in all closed back, over the ear headphones, though.Audio levels: Something inexperienced users like me should be mindful of. This has a capable and precise driver and make sure not to exceed 60-70% (50 to be safe) mark if you don't know what to expect from the file. It can be very loud and can hurt your hearing.Update- wearing it after 2 months - this thing is so heavy!
