I had the same issue. After taking everything apart and studying how the wires all fit together, I realized the gray motor hub was not fully snapped into the blue battery base (though it sure looked like it was). And so the two little white wire terminals inside those two pieces that connect the batteries to the motor hub were not a tight fit.
