The consistency of the sauce is thicker than water but not as thick as a heavy stew. The food actually tastes pretty good (yes, I tasted it out of curiosity) even if it is unseasoned. Our little guy loves it. **Q: what is the shelf life for these cans?** A: I haven't reviewed "Grandma's Chicken Soup", just Polynesian BBQ and one of the others. I would guess that the shelf life is typical of canned foods, though. The cases I bought (two different flavors) have "Best By" dates of August 2018. **Q: Has anybody had any luck with their cats losing weight on this? I have a very fat cat who needs to lose weight on grain-free food.** A: Out of all the Weruva flavors, this is my cats favorite. Like others here, he was placed on a prescription diet for digestive problems and weight loss. He gained 2 lbs on the prescription diet! I believe getting him off the high carb is going to help his weight loss. Talk to a vet about how much to feed each day since it depends on caloric content of the food you're feeding. Total calories vary with each variety of canned food and you can find the total calories per can by checking the label for kcal/can. Our kitten is just about to turn 1 year old. We fed him Purina wet kitten food. I was looking to transition him to adult food when I found this. He took to it immediately and I can tell he loves it more than the old brand. The quality of the food is excellent.
