Review: Informative but Lacking Illustrations - I finally finished this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed every page. It was exactly what I was looking for, an in-depth look at British wildlife. However, I do wish there were more illustrations included. There’s literally nothing, which is a bit frustrating because I had to go out of my way to look up what the animals actually look like, which would take me out the flow. A few pictures in the book would have made it much more convenient. That said, the content was excellent, and I still really enjoyed it. I’m definitely planning to read more from the same authors!
Review: Nature writing about nature - Written by two accomplished field naturalists in a clear engaging way. It's refreshing to learn about wildlife from nature writing these days instead of some of the navel gazing that seems to prevail. The calendar format is not new (see also Notes from Walnut Tree Farm by Roger Deakin and Field Notes From A Hidden City by Esther Woolfson to name two good examples) but works well providing snapshots of the natural world. I disagree with other reviews citing the lack of illustrations. In my experience this doesn't detract from the book. After all it's easy enough to look up species online or in a field guide.
