## Overview

CATAN Junior is a multi-award-winning, pirate-themed board game designed for 2-4 players aged 6 and up. With a quick 30-minute playtime, it introduces young players to strategic thinking and resource management through building ships and pirate lairs. ## Description

From the manufacturer CATAN Junior CATAN Junior takes families with children ages 6 and up to a place quite different from Catan as we know it. There are no "settlers" around here. Instead, the players slip into the role of pirates who build their hideouts - called pirates' lairs - all over the islands and set sail to find new places and build more pirates' lairs there. CATAN experts will easily recognize that many essential elements of the CATAN base game are included in CATAN Junior, although - in accordance with the theme - they received different names: pirates' lairs are built adjacent to islands, and if the islands' numbers are rolled, the players receive resource tiles. The resource tiles depict gold, goats, wood, molasses, and cutlasses. The die-cut resource tiles included in CATAN Junior are very convenient for children because unlike in the CATAN game for adults, the players don't have to hold cards in their hands but can place the resource tiles in front of them. CATAN Junior can also be played as a 2-player game. Although CATAN Junior contains some simplified rules so that 6-year-olds can participate without any difficulty, it is still unmistakably a CATAN game. CATAN Junior is not just a game for kids but a genuine family game, to be enjoyed by adults and young children alike.

Review: Great introduction to Catan - My 5 year old loves board games and has watched the grown ups play Settlers of CATAN for a while now so we thought we would introduce him to the junior version. He understood the game mechanics straight away and loves playing it. The theme is pirate so the resources are a little different from the adult version, but it still incorporates most of it’s gameplay such as the ‘robber’ which in this case is a ‘captain’ and instead of building roads and cities you build ships and lairs or trade for Coco the Parrot tiles which is like the Development Cards. I wish it would give you the option of where to place your first lair and ship though as this is one of the main strategies in Settlers of CATAN and I don’t think it would’ve made it too hard for juniors. Overall, there’s not much room for strategy planning as much of it is down to luck but I guess as a junior game for my 5 year old, will do now. I expect he will outgrow it by the time he’s 7 though and move onto the proper game, but it is a great introductory game for him nevertheless.
Review: One of the best board games for 6 year olds - Rules of the game are easy enough for a six year old to understand, but the gameplay has a level of complexity that makes this game very fun and enjoyable for kids and adults. Overall the game result comes down to pure luck, as in every game of this age range. Nevertheless, you can still trade and make strategic decisions. You can trade with marketplace or bank, you can choose how to spend collected resources. The quality of the product is good and it has many plastic figures, which I call a "toy" element in the board game, that my son enjoys so much.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I have 5 & 6 year old girls, do you think their age could handle this game? Could they play it without adult supervision? How much reading is there?**
A: They would be able to handle it themselves...once they understand the rules. Though this is the Junior version of the game, there are still a few rules. My 7 year old kind of makes things up he doesn't remember when I'm not playing, but he still has a good time with his friends that are around his same age. If you're willing to play it a few times to help them learn the rules, then this game would be enjoyable to them by themselves. There's not much reading once you know the rules. Just rolling the dice and moving your pieces depending on what you roll.

**Q: How is it possible to get 7 lairs on the board to win with 4 players? We couldn't fit more than 5 tops before the board was full. Who wins then?**
A: There are 42 spaces for lairs, thats 7 for each of 4 players. You could get blocked but i feel like one player should be able to get 7 at least. Are you placing the lairs correctly and using the correct board side? I havent had this issue.

**Q: Would this be interesting enough to a just turned 6 that has been playing regular adult monopoly for almost a year already? To simplistic or perfect**
A: The game is a lot like regular Catan, with a few rule changes here and there. The strategy aspect is well-represented, and the game plays through much faster, making it more accessible for kids, who don't always have the greatest attention span. Practically speaking, having a 'ghost pirate' instead of a 'thief' and how that changes that aspect of the game was something I found I liked, given that I play the game with my 5 year old. The game does hold the interest of older -- 17 & 18 -- boys, and as an adult I find that I can easily play it. I can't judge for you, as I don't know your child's strengths and weaknesses, but hopefully what I noticed can help you make a decision!

**Q: Are the directions for the game in spanish?**
A: Not this version but there is a Spanish edition of the regular version. https://www.amazon.com/colonos-Catán-Settlers-Catan-Spanish/dp/8415828926
