**Q: I have an old whale gusher and the diaphragm is torn, the outside diameter is 5" so i don't know if all the repair diaphragm sizes are the same, need**
A: All diameters are not the same.I had to return mine and go to West Marine.

**Q: How many gallons of clean water should I be able to pump before one of the parts wears out, and which part is going to wear out first?**
A: On mine, the screw holding the clamping plate assembly failed due to corrosion after about 25 years.  The exterior diaphragm on my bulkhead mount is showing wear from weather but it is not an essential part of the pump.  Replacement parts are readily available and assembly/disassembly is easy.   I wouldn't be concerned about lifetime gallons unless your boat leaks.  In that case, the pumper will wear out first.

**Q: I need the deckplate/bulkhead diaphragm also, where the handle fits in. Is it included, if not how do I get that?**
A: The pumping diaphragm is included; the kit didn’t contain a deck plate seal.

**Q: If you need one of these, do you need it because you somehow make a mistake and use the pump wrong, or because it just wears out?**
A: The rubber diaphragm on my pump had aged and had some tears in it. I don’t know the age of it; it took perhaps 30 minutes to uninstall the pump, clean the parts and install the new rubber components. If yours makes a sucking or hissing noise as you pump, it might be time to install this repair kit.
