It is spill proof as long as the child knows to fold down the mouth piece. It comes with a spare straw and a straw brush. The silicone sleeve on the bottom is removable for washing (or if you just don't want it on for whatever reason). It is slender enough for the side pocket of a backpack or tote bag.
