## Overview

Gerda Lerner’s 'The Creation of Patriarchy' is a groundbreaking academic work that traces the historical and cultural origins of women’s subordination in Western civilization. Using archaeological, literary, and artistic evidence, it challenges biological determinism and reveals patriarchy as a social construct that can be dismantled. This critically acclaimed book is a top-ranked sociology bestseller, essential for anyone committed to understanding and transforming gender dynamics.

## Description

When precisely did the ideas, symbols and metaphors of patriarchy take hold of Western civilization? When were women, so central to the creation of society, moved on to the sidelines? Where is the evidence to support the notion that male dominance over women is a natural state of things? Gerda Lerner's radical review of Western civilization shows that male dominance over women has nothing to do with biology, and everything to do with cultural and historical habits. Dr Lerner draws her evidence from a host of archaeological, literary, and artistic sources, using them to pinpoint the critical turning points in the allocation of women's roles in society. She draws especially on archaeological evidence of the cultures of ancient Hebrew and Mesopotamian societies, cultures from which modern Western civilization has largely derived. This approach enables her to trace the ways in which men and women have been classified as essentially separate creatures - from ancient Greek philosophy onwards - and also to examine ways in which their experience of society differs, through the structures and symbols of class and religion. Most of all, by showing patriarchy as the result of an historical process, Lerner produces an irresistable argument that it can be altered, and ended, by similar means.

Review: MEN.. read this! This explains why we are in the crazy mess we are right now - Early chapters supported my loose (evolutionary thoughts, I am a Biologist) on the rise of Patriarchy with scholarly evidence after an argument with another male friend who was apparently`the` expert on Feminism... so gratifying (I`m being petty ha ha). However I learned SO much and was able to follow the human evolutionary thread with Lerner`s erudite research and compact delivery. The latter chapters bring us into the more modern ages and expose our present battle against stupidity imo. Is it too late are we too entrenched in this? I feel even more certain in my Feminist approach to life and mechanisms of humanity , sociology and our survival! (although I admit am not nearl well read enough in current Feminist theory and politics to espouse one school of Feminist thought Vs another). A truly important book for women and one that ALL men should have a read of. Release yourself x
Review: Never look at History the same way again. - Mandatory reading for anyone interested in looking at Historical events.
