Review: Excellent straw for a strong sucker ! - Excellent super lightweight compact straw. It even removes most viruses and metals. I didn’t give it 5 stars because you have to suck really hard to get the water through, and the flow rate is slow.
Review: Super Value for the Most Product - I was on the market for a new portable water filter as my original one which I “acquired” from my time in the army, was well and truly past its best. I spent a bit of time researching the options out there and narrowed it down to between, the Sawyer system and this Aztrek system. What decided it for me to go with the Aztrek was: Firstly, the slightly lower price tag for the Aztrek (approx. £5 less at time of writing). Secondly, filtration scope, the Aztrek filtered down to 0.01 microns as opposed to 0.1 microns for the Sawyer and the Aztrek filters out viruses also unlike the other systems I considered. Finally, and this is me being patriotic, Aztrek is a UK company so I always try to buy British whenever possible. As you can see from the pictures I provide, the system is very versatile and simple to use. Starting with the outer bag itself; this can be used for storing the filter when not in use. It has a resealable zip lock fastener. The bag is quite sturdy but may get a little brittle over time and in very cold conditions so maybe in time it would wear out but that is a minor issue. You will see the contents from the pictures there is a standard size screw thread water bottle, which holds 400ml (which is more than enough for a quick brew worth of water) it is very sturdy and comes with a small karabiner to fasten it to your belt or pack. A simple addition but useful non the less. A drinking tube is included for attaching to the filter for direct drinking from a water source. As you can see from the pictures, I also used the tube for attaching the filter to my hydration bladder as an in-line filter, this could be improved upon if the out flow of the filter was the same diameter as the inflow, but with a bit of effort I managed to connect my hydration tube with bite valve to the outflow, unfortunately the picture showing that is lost, along with the ones showing me use the filter on the fells, sorry, my bad. There also comes with the system a cap for bottle, as I use the bottle for holding dirty water, I don’t make use of the sports cap design so it could be superfluous to others too. There is also a small piece of paper with writing on it which I am led to believe are called instructions, as a man I cannot comprehend this document but it does look very simple and easy to understand if reading instructions is your thing. Now onto the main part of the system, the filter itself, it is uber lightweight (as is the complete system) and comes with a lanyard which I found a great addition. Using the filter direct into a water course you could easily end up dropping it (which I do/did) but as it was around my neck, no problem, (the river gods trying to take it from me, lost out this time). If I was to have a small criticism of the filter it would be that there is no direction of flow indication on the unit. Whilst a very small concern it would be a simple addition that would assist user new to filtration devices. I used the filter with the drinking tube direct into a water course on the UK fells and it worked a treat, zero bad taste and very easy to use with a satisfactory flow rate. In regards to flow rate, I did do a small (non-scientific) test. I filled the supplied bottle (400ml) and connected it to the filter and it took 81 seconds to filter through, which I found to be more than suitable for my needs. I did also have it connected to my hydration bladder as a gravity fed setup and just let it trickle through whilst I got on with other wild camp activities. In summary, a very good product for a very reasonable price. Super lightweight and easy to use. Improvements I would make if Aztrek are reading; 1. add a direction of flow arrow to the body of the filter. 2. Use softer plastic for the storage pack. If you are after a portable water filter then you would be very hard pressed to beat this device.
