Sharp enough to chop wood straight out of the box. Will certainly take a better edge, but right now there's no need for what I am using it for. For the money, this is a good axe for splitting wood for the camp fire. It's not the lightest, but it's not too heavy for the pack either (my 12 year old son carries it). The sheath is a bit flimsy and won't last, but I'm a leather worker, so I'll just make a better one. Really, £6 gets you a decent chopper. None of my local big name DIY stores get anywhere near competing on price for comparable items, and this is delivered to your door. What more could you want? This was part of a bigger order. The seller was waiting for stock on some of the other items but sent what he had at no extra cost to myself, rather than keep me waiting.
