Review: My Rat Terrier thinks it’s a treat - My 14 year old Rat Terrier was diagnosed with Kidney Disease a year ago and Sarcoma Cancer 6 months ago. I’ve had her on Hills Prescription Diet dog food and we are also making her a couple of homemade recipes that was for dogs with Kidney Disease. She loves the homemade a lot more than any of the Hills. We alternate her food options so she eats something different for five days then starts all over for another five days ect. She also has two different types of KD dry anytime she wants it and KD dog bones when she comes back into the house after going outside to potty. We bought this Dave’s Tuna flavor pate to use as a pill wrap. She is taking Gabapentin twice a day and since she clinches her teeth tight in order not to take a pill we mix one with her dinner at night and we put the other one in the middle of about a tablespoon of Dave’s pate before noon. She’s so excited when she knows we are working on giving her some pate. She swollows it and the pill so fast she doesn’t even notice the pill. She loves Dave’s Tuna pate. Dogs with Kidney Disease generally do not eat Tuna because it contains high levels of phosphorus, sodium, and mercury that can strain kidneys but her Vet said a little food that isn’t prescribed would be okay at this stage of her life.
Review: First serving made a difference. - I have a 15 year old lab mix. He had his left CCL repaired by TPLO, in 2022. He just had the Figure 8 or Tightrope procedure done on his right CCL (March 8th, 2024), in North Carolina (cannot thank Creedmoor Road Animal Hospital enough). He has arthritis, which likely causes him pain and likely contributes to the fact that he has slowed down considerably. Had to have my veterinarian do blood work (which cost me as much as an original painting by a French impressionist), before the surgery. I was told that Tohbi's (Tohbi means "White" or "White Dog," in the Choctaw language) kidney function numbers were elevated, likely due to his advanced age. I have been cooking for Tohbi (chicken, rice, sweet potato, green beans, peas, and carrots) to help with the kidney function. However, I will be leaving to paddle the Buffalo River soon and need to leave my husband to take over the care of my fur babies, while I'm gone. I wanted to make sure that, if hubby runs out of the homemade stew while I'm gone, that he will have a healthy alternative to mix with Tohbi's kibble. I gave Tohbi his first serving yesterday and it was like I shaved five years off of his age. He was walking all around the house all day wagging his tail. I have not seen him like that for a very long time. So, this food definitely gets five stars. The fact that it is kidney friendly and does not need a veterinarian's approval is a bonus. Update: I'm not sure if the formulation has changed or if Tohbi has just decided that he is not crazy about this food, but he does not scarf it up like he used to. So, I'll probably only use this if I happen to run out of the home made chicken stew that I generally cook up for him.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is the protein content of the food? I cannot see the analysis in the pictures**
A: It’s low enough, it’s the phosphorus you need to be concerned about. Low protein is not always the way to go for a dog with kidney disease. Phosphorus is what is hard on the kidneys. This food is low in phosphorus.

### ⭐ Looks like pink sludge; tastes worse!
*by A***R on April 8, 2026*

I bought this, hoping that my senior dog would eat it over the more expensive National brand. I knew, as soon as I opened the can, she wouldn't touch it. In fact, I tried to feed it to my other dog, hoping it wouldn't go to waste, but he turned up his nose and walked away. That's when I knew it was hopeless, because he ate everything. If I'd known I could have returned it, I would have. Instead, it went in the trash where it belongs. Ugh!
