Not really sure if that covers the kidneys but maybe. **Q: I have 2 boys i need to buy one. one is age 7 and one is age 5 . what size would i need to buy?** A: I bought the Youth Large for my 9year old son. Other than it being a little long it fits great. He's 60lbs 4'2". He's small for his age so depending on your boys height and weight you may want to go to a Medium for your 7 and small for your 5yo. **Q: Some of the reviews say it protects the elbows. Can you explain that since this is a short sleeve shirt?** A: The long sleeve version does have elbow protection. That's what I got my son. The short sleeve, obviously, does not. Love it! Ample protection with minimal bulk and breathable material. We machine wash in cold water without fabric softener and hang to dry. I know the pads take a beating in the washer and would stay together longer if I hand washed as recommended, but I choose the washing machine.
