It's not so rough that it is uncomfortable, yet it still does a great job of exfoliating. I actually look forward to using it daily because it feels good. It works wonderfully with body wash, bar soap (I like to use goat soap) or even simply with water and no soap at all. I don't regularly use it on my back, so don't need the length, and opted to cut mine into 3 pieces and singed the edges very lightly with a lighter to smooth them out.
