If you do not know which drive you have, a #1 "R" drive or a later MR/Alpha drive you have to look at your engine serial number. If your serial number is BEFORE 6854393 it is an R it will use an early water pump kit UNLESS your lower unit has been updated at some time. If you can not identify a serial number, you can drop the lower unit. If you have a pre-load pin on the top of the vertical shaft，you have the earlier #1 or "R" drive & this is NOT the correct kit. If your vertical shaft does not have a pre-load pin, it is a MR or Alpha Gen 1 drive & this Is the correct kit.The best way to be absolutely sure of the type of drive you have is to drop the lower unit & check to see if you have a preload pin or not.
