As the manual says, it's best to use this broom in the forward motion with the front of the broom going at the dirt. If I point the broom at me, with the handle making what would be an acute angle it seems to work even better. So the front of it is still what is coming at the dirt but you are pulling the broom towards you instead of pushing it away if that makes sense. I'm not sure why this seems to work better but it does. I use this broom around 3 times a day between 2 babies and 2 dogs, it's constantly in use and still doing great! It has been a lifesaver for dog hair. I honestly didn't expect this sweeper to work this well. It's great! My dog is shedding like crazy and this really works! I have a newborn and a 2 year old with autism and he doesn't like loud noises so I can't run the vacuum much but this is quiet and picks up great on hardwood. There are many people who gave bad reviews only because with didn't work well on carpet but the description specifically states that it is for HARD SURFACES!
