Review: Better Than We Hoped! - Brilliant product for biltong lovers, and those who want to dehydrate other things (although why would you want to distract from making biltong! HA!) My South African hubby has been searching for a biltong box for years, and when we found the Kalahari, we pushed "buy" immediately. It arrived quickly, we assembled it and within a few days had our first batch of delicious biltong. PROS: 1. Countertop sized, and still holds about 5 lbs of meat. 2. They include 10 drying racks for other items (again.....distracting from biltong, but you-do-you!) 3. Biltong hooks are included, as is a handy recipe book 4. It's QUIET. Barely know it's there 5. It stays cool to the touch, which means it can be placed anywhere 6. Did a beautiful job drying our biltong in a clean, temperature-controlled environment with constant airflow 7. Drip tray makes cleanup easy. A lot of spices fall off during the drying process and it would be a pain to vacuum them out. A good trip tray made it easy 8. Controls are intuitive and easy to use SUGGESTIONS: 1. It would be helpful if the makers included a "Quick Set-Up" guide. A few things had us guessing when we put the machine together. We figured it out, but some instructions would've been nice. That's it! Go forth, buy this wonderful machine and get busy making biltong. YUM!

I think the idea is excellent and it works well, plus you get the best of both worlds. It also looks good (unlike home made ones) and will fit in any room. It was pretty quiet. I was able to fit about 2KG (4.4 lbs) of meat in this machine without being over packed. I had large slabs and a couple of smaller pieces. The smaller pieces took 2-3 days to be ready (I like medium to dry biltong). The larger pieces took about 5 days. Note, the ones at the back closer to the fan dry quicker in my experience. Overall, really like this biltong box and feel like it was worth it. Really like the biltong book that came with it and the hooks for hanging are perfect. Some things I would like to see change: 1) it would be nice if the box could run for a few days without needing to reset the timer every 24 hours. Not a big deal if you are at home and the box is in an easy place to reset but if you go away for a couple days it would be a problem. 2) would be nice if there was some sort of clip or something to keep the hanging bars in place, they easily fall out and it’s a mission to put them back when the box is fully packed. Overall as is, I still give it 5 stars as it does what it promises and more.
