The casing is fairly firm, enough such that it wouldn't feel intrusive in a backpack whilst still providing protection. There is a very soft lining on the inside that protects again scratches. There is also an additional pocket on the outside for any other accessories, however I've found that it is quite difficult to fit stuff in there. Nice and lightweight and as I mentioned does not feel intrusive or noticeable in a bag.
