If you live anywhere with a remote Winter half'ish of this will die no matter what you do. This is essentially "Contractor Mix", I'd recommend using their black beauty ultra, and I'd also commend the company standing by their product after I learned the painful lesson I elude to above. **Q: Do you recommend using a starter fertilizer with this seed** A: I would. But please be aware that this seed is mostly annual rye, which means it will only last one season. You will have to at least overseed in the fall. **Q: When is the best time to plant this? I live in NJ** A: to be honest, the best time to seed is in the fall ( im in NJ as well). But if you are looking for sprin seeding, you can do it in mid april **Q: How well does this work with poor/sandy soil?** A: I have a variety of soils - sandy, clay, good dirt & poor dirt. It worked in all of these soils. It also worked in an area with a lot of wood chips. Anyone who says it's not growing is doing one of two things wrong: 1) not watering it multiple times a day, 2) not putting a 1/4"-1/2" layer of soft dirt over the seed to hold it down. I bought one bag at first and tried it out on a few different areas and once I saw it was successful I bought a second bag. I noticed that if I loosen up the dirt before putting the seed down, and then put dirt on top of the seed, sprouts will appear within a week or so. If I don't do those things, and I water for a week straight, they won't pop up, but then I pile dirt on those areas and the next day I can already see a tiny sprout. I have seen it done a different way - put the seed and dirt in a wheelbarrow and mix it all up, then pour it over your yard. I haven't tried that so I don't know if that works as well or better. I just keep doing it the way I explained above and it works great for me. The only problem is I don't really know what I'm doing...like when to seed, how much shade or sun it really can take, and how it will survive in hot climates. I live in Phoenix and I planted it around spring time but by the middle of summer ALL of the grass I planted was dead. I probably did something wrong, or Phoenix was simply too hot for this grass even though I watered so much that my water bill was sky high.
