## Description

FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements FLD glass is the highest level low dispersion glass available with extremely high light transmission. This optical glass has a performance equal to fluorite glass which has a low refractive index and low dispersion compared to current optical glass. It also benefits from high anomalous dispersion. These characteristics give excellent correction for residual chromatic aberration (secondary spectrum) which cannot be corrected by ordinary optical glass and ensures high definition and high contrast images. This lens incorporates two FLD glass elements, which compensate for colour aberration. In addition, two glass mold elements and one hybrid aspherical lens give excellent correction for field curvature and astigmatism. High definition images are ensured throughout the entire zoom range .Sigma’s unique Large aperture throughout the entire zoom range The large F2.8 aperture allows the use of fast shutter speeds and provides a bright viewfinder image, helping the photographer confirm accurate focusing. It is also ideal for emphasizing the subject by creating a natural, blurred background. .Covering a wide range of focal lengths This lens covers a wide range of focal lengths from 17mm and has an equivalent angle of view of a 25.5-75mm with a 35mm SLR camera. It is ideal for general photography as well as portraits and landscapes. Compact construction The lens has a compact construction with a diameter of 83.5mm, overall length of 91.8mm and weight of 565g. This compact and lightweight construction makes it ideal for travel photography. .Super Multi-Layer Coating and superior peripheral brightness The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting as well as providing sharp and high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range. This lens also benefits from superior peripheral brightness and provides sharp and high contrast images even at the maximum apertures. .Fast and quiet AF with internal focusing The lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic motor), ensuring fast and quiet AF. The inner focusing system eliminates front lens ration, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type hood and circular polarising filters. .Close focusing capability This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 28cm throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5. .Rounded diaphragm This lens has rounded 7 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive bokeh to the out of focus area of the image.

Review: Unbeatable at the price I got it (£324) - If you want to take nice arty photos with the subject in focus and the backdrop blurred, this is the best zoon you can get at this price range. The only thing better would be the new 1.8 zoom or else a prime lens. Be aware that this has a 77mm screw so you do need bigger filters. However, this does mean that the lens lets in a lot of light and is good in low light levels. I always buy UV filters for my lenses. However, I read some comments saying this was unnecessary and so took it out without buying a UV filter. :-( Got a scratch in the first week. Not sure how. But it is right at the periphery and not affecting the photos so I have got over it. But there is a UV filter on now! My camera is a Sony Alpha 300. I keep being told that I need to upgrade my camera in order to get the full advantage of advanced lenses. Don't let them kid you! As long as you are not printing huge prints (I mean bigger than A3), the camera will be fine. The lens is good because of the clarity and ability to produce great bokeh. You don't need a full frame camera to do that.
Review: Amazing lens for the price - Product arrived on time. Had 2 hours play, then straight into a shoot in a local studio the next day. Razor sharp images, focusing is absolutely spot on through all focusing lengths at f11. Lowlight is also good. Bokeh is relatively smooth. Cannot find anything to fault.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: EX DC OS HSM, what does these abbreviation means??**
A: EX is Sigma's pro series lens (called EX finished), DC means it is for crop sensor cameras (DG for full frame), OS stands for Optical Stabilization (Image Stabilization) and HSM means it has hypersonic AF motor which is driven by untrasonic waves to provide a quiet operation.

**Q: Is it work with Canon 5D mark II?**
A: It should work but it's not the best choice. The 5D is a full frame camera, and the Sigma is for APS-C sensors (smaller sensor). You will see vignetting (black area at edge of picture). You should consider the Sigma 24-60mm 2.8 instead, or check this list for other Sigma lenses for full frame cameras: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Full-Frame-Lens-Substitutes-Sigma/lm/R1XMV8PZXQALTP

**Q: Does this lens work on the 70D? Looks like it'd be a great lens for video and stills.**
A: Yes it does work and it is a great lens. You will be happy with the picture quality and sharpness.

**Q: Please tell me if this 1 more expensive lens could be used to obtain the similar quality images than 3 less expensive lenses that I am looking at -- 35mm prime f/2.4, 50mm prime f/1.8, the kit 18-55mm lens. I am on a budget and new to SLRs...thanks in advance.**
A: I haven't used the 35mm but i can assure you the image quality is better than the 50 f1.8 or the kit lens. This sigma will serve you well as a starter lens and actually shouldn't be something you immediately feel like upgrading. Primes are well and good if you are ready for them but zooms are better for starting out. if you test out different focal lengths you can find out what prime lenses will work best for you. you don't want to buy a 35mm just to find out you'd rather have a 24, etc.
