It goes on smoothly with a damp make up sponge. Have yet to try a brush. The finish seems matte to me but I defer to others who know more about foundation than I. I have redness over the apples of my cheeks and have been using a green corrector to tone that down. This works just as well if not better and has the benefits of the high SPF.
