No, the Jettle Heats in 5 degree increments 40-90, using the left hand button, and to boil directly you would use the right hand button for 100C. We did not include 95 as a setting due to it being so close to boiling there is no use for it. Hope that helps! I assume the lid is there to prevent boil-over. The very top is a metal disk, but the sides are plastic, and there is a steam-vent on top in the center of the metal disk and that vent is made of silicone which I assume is to prevent the metal from rusting from the steam. The lid screws off and on. The interior of the base is metal (probably steel) **Q: Can I boil milk in this ?** A: You can heat milk for sure.
