That's over about two years of use. I will NOT be using a dishwasher to wash this as it simply messes up plastic in the long run, and it doesn't take too long to do so. What they mean by "safe" must be different from whether or not this plastic device will survive a couple of years of a hot dishwasher and still look/function like new. It won't.. **Q: How do you clean the silicon portion of the cup? Are the parts at the bottom exposed so that we still need to clean the parts at the bottom?** A: Yes. It’s esposed. I had to run hot soapy water through it. Then I put in the dishwasher. **Q: Would this work for separating melted butter to make clarified butter?** A: That's a great question! I make a lot of cheeses, stocks, and clarified butter. What I do is lay a single-folded piece of muslin or cheesecloth material on top of the lid. When I pour liquids through, even the smallest bits get completely strained by the cheesecloth before going into the cup. **Q: Has anyone used this for pancake batter?** A: I’ve only used it when making gravy which had a relatively thin consistency. The drop thru opening is about 1/8” which I think is too small for pancake batter. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A HELPFUL PRODUCT *by on Reviewed in the United States November 29, 2024* We purchased this item specifically for Thanksgiving dinner to address the gravy issue with the drippings. In fact, we ordered it the day before and Amazon delivered overnight, which saved the day. The OXO can handle up to 4 cups, which is more than adequate in most instances, and has a perforated tray that catches the odd bits and pieces that you don't want in the liquid. The plastic container is food safe, high quality and won't break or crack should you accidentally drop it. Once the liquid is in the container, you wait a few minutes for the liquid to separate, squeeze the handle to release the gravy drippings, and it drains through a small rubber opening in the bottom. Release the squeeze handle when you get to the desired level, and all you are left with is the residual oil/fat in the OXO container to be disposed of. A clean, efficient, no mess approach that is levels better than the syphon tubes, basing tubes or other fat separators at much higher cost. The OXO is also dishwasher safe, but we prefer to hand wash to make sure all of the parts get cleaned thoroughly. It reassembles in three parts and stores upright in your cabinet or drawer. Thought I would give this a shot and it has been great so far. It worked well with roast. Separates quickly and the au jus was excellent. I even froze some leftover to use in the future. I also used it with the drippings from a boston butt. The wife always complained about the grease in my pulled pork. She was happy with how it tuned out this time. Kinda the best of both worlds. I get my juices and she doesn’t have to deal with all the grease.
