The magnetic field generated passes through the pipe whatever material it is. They definitely work. **Q: Are these Bar magnets** A: They're really powerful rectangular magnets set into the yellow case each side of the pipe. I'm assuming here but I guess they're Neodymium. **Q: Are they any good for preventing a limescale build up in a shower?** A: Our area suffers from very hard water. I am a convert to magnet theory but it is one of those things it is very difficult to actually prove. I use one pair on the water inlet from the mains and the other on the spur connection to the shower unit. I am certain they work. The best indicator I have found is that my electric kettle gets no where as furred up as it used to. I put 2 on my main inlet pipe and 2 on the pipe going into the hot water tank. But before purchasing these magnets, I had bad lime scale build up on all the taps and both kettles, now 95% of the lime scale as gone. There is sometimes a slight residue of lime scale that just easily wipes off. I did also read that the magnetic force works better in some areas than others, depending on the chemical composition of the water where you live. So basically there is a risk that it won’t work, or be very efficient where you live. My lime scale was so bad, that the risk was worth taking. I suppose it also depends on how powerful the magnets are. These that I purchased seem very powerful magnets, for the job that they need to do.
