Definitely not for espresso - If you are looking for a grinder to be used with a percolator, cafetiere, or filter, this machine is perfect and is for you. It can quicky produce the necessary grind, in the quantity required, and the large container can cater for bulk amounts. If you are looking to make a barista style coffee (espresso based) that you'd get from a specialty shop then this machine is definitely not for you, the grind is not fine enough. From reading through the comments here there are some 'hacks' to make the grind finer - such as de-assembling and putting the plates closer together, or putting the grinds through twice. The latter may work, but if you want an espresso you need a different grinder. The finest fine setting is so coarse, that the water pushes through too quick to make espresso. For espresso, the basic desertcart Choice grinder on here is much cheaper, simpler and better - you 'push to grind', feel the grinds, and push again for a few seconds if you need to make finer. I notice the seller has removed the word "Espresso" from their Product Description, which is appropriate, and on that basis I should probably give a higher star rating.

**Q: is this a conical burr grinder**
A: conical or flat -- makes NO difference.  There are $3,000 grinders with flat burrs.  BTW this is NOT for espresso.  try it and fail.

**Q: Is it OK to put a small amount of coffee in the hopper (e.g., enough for one cup) and let the timer turn off after the hopper has been depleted?**
A: Yes. It's not a problem. There is a safety switch in the foot of the unit that requires the cup to be in place for the motor to run. If the machine is still running when the coffee is gone from the hopper, simply remove the collection cup. This will stop the motor from running unnecessarily.

**Q: Can it be used as a grain mill?**
A: This thing has been a workhorse! I use it for grinding whole oats with hulls (sometimes sunflower seeds too) to make up horse feed 2x a day. I grind 4-5 cups each feeding with the setting on coarse, and after almost 2 1/2 years it is just now getting a little dull and heating up to where it quits on me toward the end of the 5th cup. I am getting ready to purchase again even though the first one is still working... just not quite as well. It has never let me down! I have been very happy, considering I have not been using it for its intended use.

**Q: will it grind nuts into flour?**
A: No this is a coffee grinder and should not be used to grind anything else. It will dull the Burr and ultimately ruin the machine.

If you are looking for a grinder to be used with a percolator, cafetiere, or filter, this machine is perfect and is for you. It can quicky produce the necessary grind, in the quantity required, and the large container can cater for bulk amounts. If you are looking to make a barista style coffee (espresso based) that you'd get from a specialty shop then this machine is definitely not for you, the grind is not fine enough. From reading through the comments here there are some 'hacks' to make the grind finer - such as de-assembling and putting the plates closer together, or putting the grinds through twice.
