Let half lay on the bottom of the basket in a c shape and cover with dirt. The piece of wick that is hanging thru the basket will absorb water from the bottom of the pot. **Q: How deep is the inner pot?** A: About 6” leaving about an inch below it where the water rests **Q: How do you know how much water to put in the pot?** A: Each pot comes with a white piece of rope (a wick that the water travels up) that goes into the bottom of the white part where the soil/plant goes into. Therefore, as long as that wick is submerged into the water, the plant is getting water. **Q: What is round pellets inside these pots when they come** A: They are meant for drainage. Each bag can fill 1 pot fully. I believe the intent is this pebbles are meant to be placed as the base under the soil to promote wicking and draining.The material is really good polypropylene (i think) and is decently thick at 0.086" (2.2mm) for the outside and 0.06" (1.5mm) on the the liner. If it is polypropylene, ussually this plastic is good chemical and uv resistance which are perfect for my needs.Interior: 5.5x4.5" (140x110mm) 106.91 cu in or 1.8qt(1.75l) Exterior: 6.75x7.5". Water reservoir holds about 4.5 cups (1.065L) if you want the water level to touch the bottom of the inner vessel. It also has lifting tabs to easily lift the inner vessel. It comes with a foot of quarter inch (5mm) thick of synthetic wick for each pot (seems like soft nylon) which doesnt rot like cotton. I also like how the inner liner is fenestrated which would assist the roots in breathing. I will be using these things without soil (think hydroponics or plant nerds call it semi-hydro) and i will probably remove the wick when the roots can touch the water.Well cons on this is the plastic can allow light inside (worst on the transparent version) that can let algae grow, but for me this is a small trade off being able to see the root development. Theres also no water level indicator, but i can easily diy one with a straw glued to a pingpong ball. There is no over-flow drain hole which is not good if used outdoors because the plant can drown from rain. Although you can drill a hole on the side if you really need to use this outdoors.Overall im very pleased to find these size pot with a huge reservoir and especially with a very good value.
