While strong at first, it should soon taper off to the point where you only smell it if your nose is right at the air outlet of the unit. If you don't smell it there, then the filter no longer is effective at removing odors/VOCs. **Q: Why does this filter come in two parts (carbon can be pulled away using the cloth tab)?** A: As mentioned, original Blueair filters do not have a separate carbon layer which can be pulled off. The good news is, a separate, removable carbon layer means you can replace it when the carbon is no longer effective (which is typically much sooner than the particle filter needs replacing, so it can save you money). The bad news is, you are not using the intended Blueair filter, which means you are probably not getting the same level of filtration with the same airflow as you would be otherwise. **Q: how much carbon is in the combination filter? Blueair chat told me about 7 lbs, but that is much more than the weight of the product so am skeptical** A: There is no carbon in this filter or the ones I buy, I have in the past bought the smoke eater filter. That filter has carbon, found that the cost is not worth it **Q: On the dp filter i received, on the black metal side, it says to face the fan - is that the intake side? so left: white, right: black when cover open?** A: Years ago I was told directly by the Blueair techs in Sweden, that the black carbon side of the filter needed to face outwards, so the metal grid on the particle side of the filter faces away from the ionizer at the air inlet. Otherwise the metal grid would dissipate the charge on the particles and reduce the efficiency of the filter. Have them set for automatic delivery every six months so I don’t have to think about my air filter ever which is really nice. It’s constantly running in our bedroom and with two large dogs and a husband with terrible allergies, it’s been great for us over the last 8 years. Tried to use generic filters once and they didn’t fit correctly and didn’t work nearly as well.
