Thanks.** A: Yes, there is mounting hole on the bottom of the scope **Q: can the reticule be turned off** A: no, it can not be turn off, the reticule set inside of the lens **Q: Can it be used for looking at the stars and planets ?** A: Not great for looknig at the stars and planets. Both Saturn and Jupiter are in the sky at the moment and neither the rings of Saturn nor the moons of Jupiter are visible so it does not give much more than the naked eye. Similarly there is no chance of getting a view of deep space objects through this. Obviously you can see more stars with this than the maked eye, point it at Ursa Major and you can see both Mizar and Alcor clearly, point it at the seven sisters and you should be able to make out a lot more than just seven sisters.
