The oil is, well, oily, whereas the serum is more of a gel texture. But it doesn't go foamy when applied like other shaving gels, so you can see exactly where you are shaving. During the shave I don't notice much difference between the oil and the serum - both are so much more comfortable than shaving foam - the blade glides easily over your face and you barely notice that it's taking your whiskers with it. Both give a wonderfully close shave, but the biggest difference for me is how my face feels afterwards - comfortable and smooth with the oil, but also moisturised and conditioned by the serum. You only need a tiny amount of it to cover the area to be shaved and it’s not like a sticky gooey mess that foam is. As your chin isn’t “hidden” under a mass of foam you can still see the contours of your chin and move the razor accordingly. The problem with this is that as it lathers up, it is difficult to see where you are shaving (which makes beard trimming and shaping difficult).The King of Shaves serum is somewhere between an oil and gel in terms of texture and does not lather up. This allows for a clearer view when shaving.In terms of smoothness, it provides a nice smooth shave, though not as smooth as the Arko shaving cream soap.
