The S1 has a hard wired manual multi speed control, so it does not need the thermostat to operate at all... but if connected to the thermostat, the thermostat (which you set according to your needs) automatically increases and decreases the S1 fan speed relative to where you have set the S1's multi speed control. **Q: Looking to power some of these and a controller 67. Am I correct in assuming that I could connect the usb via ‘example’ an apple 3 pin-usb plug ?** A: I would assume so, as long as it get power which is all it needs, the input is USB A, the other end of the cable is irrelevant I guess :) I dont know anything about the apple side of life, although the controller has a power jack, which in turn powers/controls the fans, the fans plug into the controller's USB A ports so dont think you need to connect anything Apple, just the controller to a power plug.
