Freeze-dried, ready-to-eat, Neapolitan ice cream. Chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream sandwiched between two chocolatey wafer cookies. Enjoy your ice cream just as the astronauts do - the freeze-dried way! Astronaut ice cream, as well as other freeze-dried food items, have been aboard space missions since the early mercury missions. They continue to be used on NASA missions today. How is astronaut ice cream freeze-dried? Freeze-drying, or lysophilisation, removes water from the ice cream by lowering the air pressure to a point where ice shifts from a solid to a gas. The ice cream is placed in a vacuum chamber and frozen until the water crystalizes. The air pressure is lowered, creating a vacuum, forcing air out of the chamber; next heat is applied, vaporizing the ice; finally a freezing coil traps the vaporized water. This process continues for hours, resulting in a perfect freeze-dried ice cream slice. Net weight 28g, made in the USA - produced in a facility that also processes peanuts, milk, soy, wheat, gluten, egg and tree nut ingredients. - calories 120 all our Astronaut Foods have the certified space technology insignia on the packaging to indicate that they are the same range as used in space by NASA astronauts. I generally use three packets with a class to allow each pupil a good sized piece. I also use freeze dried strawberries as well. These can be found in some supermarkets at a lower price than 'spacefood' and is often from the same supplier. If you need any more help try www.spaceschool.org.uk **Q: How big is it in centimetres?** A: Hi at a guess I'd say packet size was 12 cm and content a good few cms smaller...kind creamy and crunchy and quite tasty....A fun thing for kids **Q: I'm off to the sahara desert to run the marathon des sables - would this work in those heat conditions?** A: Yes, I think that would be a good thing to take & refreshing. good luck! **Q: Does it need to be kept in the freezer** A: No the ice cream is a dried food that you can use from the packet (can't remember but you may be able to hydrate it but my son and his friends at school ate it from the packet - it was a fun addition to their space topic). ## Frequently Bought Together - Backpacker's Pantry Astronaut Freeze Dried Neapolitan Ice Cream, One Serving Pouch - Astronaut Foods Freeze-Dried Ice Cream Sandwich, NASA Space Dessert, Vanilla, 1 Count - Mountain House Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich | Freeze Dried Backpacking & Camping Food | 1 Serving --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - πŸ›’ **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** β€” Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** β€” Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - πŸ’° **No Hidden Fees** β€” All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - πŸ”„ **15-Day Free Returns** β€” Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - πŸ”’ **Secure Payments** β€” Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** β€” Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.us/products/48022249-astronaut-food-astronaut-neapolitain-ice-cream-sandwich](https://www.desertcart.us/products/48022249-astronaut-food-astronaut-neapolitain-ice-cream-sandwich) --- *Product available on Desertcart United States of America* *Store origin: US* *Last updated: 2026-11-01*
