As the title stated this is the reason (with X and the Zelda wii U) I bought the wii U. Obviously if you read this review you may already have a Wii U and wondering if it's worth to buy. I aim to review that title from a intermediate gamer who tries to explain this game to a casual gamer or someone who heard about it but never play. I will try to keep it short and give as much details as possible. Before we go any further I think I will give my ranking for the Mario kart games I played from the less to the most favour. 6) Mario kart double Dash 5) Mario Kart GBA 4) Mario Kart DS 3) Mario kart wii 2) Mario Kart N64 1) Mario Kart (SNES) Bear in mind it's always a constant battle between N64 and SNES version for the number 1 spot which are the first in the series. For me they are simple and the replay value is just great. OK what's Mario Kart? It's a fantasy go-kart game where the protagonist of Mario series and those exclusive to Mario's spin off party games race for the title of the ultimate kart champion. You have 32 tracks in total, 8 cups to win and up to 22 characters to choose from (not sure the number is correct and even if it is at the time of writing the number will increase). The game can be play with the Wii U game pad, the wii remote only, the wii remote with the nunchuk, the wii controller or the wii U controller. I did not test with the Wii controller as I don't own one. You can play up to four players locally or if you don't have friend to play with you, can play online for FREE. Mario kart has several mode which are: - Grand Prix mode: 12 racers compete for the title. 1,2,3 or 4 Human racers against the AI. - time trial: race against the time where 1 player tries to be the fastest on track. - Vs race: 1,2,3,4 player racer against each other or as a team. - battle: 1,2,3 or 4 player try to pop each other balloon with item in a special arena. For grand Prix, time trial and Vs race there are 3 levels of difficulty 50cc= easy,100 cc= normal and 150cc = expert. There is a rumour on the web (with a picture) which reveal that the game may feature additional mode (Bomb-Omb Blast and Shine Thief) but at the time of the writing is still a rumour. This bring me to my next point the DLC. At the time of the writing, it's unknown if the consumer will have to pay for DLC in order to gain additional characters, Kart's parts, new tracks/arenas. I am not a fan of DLC at all and I will downgrade my note if I have to pay for DLC in order to gain additional track but Nintendo has the reputation to give most of its DLC for free. It will be a very good marketing move if it happen. Either way (free or not), the game will expand from the initial purchase. In Japan the players can have a Mercedes skin kart as DLC (which I do believe is free). One thing to bear in mind if you are new to the series or play mario kart Wii. The game is accessible to everybody, much easier than Mario kart wii. My wife is not at ALL what you would call an expert but she has fun and really enjoy herself playing that game. At first it will be tough especially if you setup the controller on motion but after the first race you will be OK. If you are a parent and want to play with the kids, it's a good game to play all together. Just be aware that your competitive side will emerge even if you think you don't have one. Something worth mentioning, for a limited time (until 30/07/2014) only if you buy that game you will be able to claim a free Wii U digital game (which can be claim until end of September 2014) after purchase. If you buy the game on 01/08/2014 you won't be able to claim any free wii U game. If you buy Mario before the 01/08/2014 but claim it after 30/09/2014 you won't get the game either. Personally we chose Super Mario Wii U which at the time was still worth Β£39. It's like buy one game get one free. It just a good marketing thing and incentive for people to buy the game now. Please bear i stating this matter cause it make the game very good value even @ Β£40/Β£60. Even without it the game itself is good value @Β£40 or lower. For me the aim of this game (and should be the case for every game) is to be fun and togetherness. In that aspect Mario kart succeed in that area. Do you want a game you can play again and again? then give it a shoot you won't be disappointed. I would like to argue the point of some reviews where you may read (or hear) the game is similar to the previous entry... which is true for all franchise/series!!!! I don't know what others players expect but if they were hoping that Mario ad co will then put weapons on their kart and flying to a far far away galaxy then start shooting mutants/alien/robots or even humans in order to save the universe and just for the series to be different... I think they don't understand the concept of series. finally here my note (don't want to go in details): - Fun 10/10: You going to have a fun. - Replay value - 10/10: You will come back to it even after a year - Graphics - 10/10: Wow - Music - 10/10: fantastic!!! - easy to play/learning curve - 8/10: may be tricky if you use the motion setting. - Price - 8/10: cause of the buy one get one free game otherwise I will score it 5/10 especially if DLC are not free.. On the bases that graphics is not everything, the fun factor and the replay value is what drive my purchase the most. I can't at this minute give this game less than 5 stars. May change depend on the DLC status (see update status in 3 month time). The game has been previewed so well up to now (Putting Nintendo's efforts for earlier Wii U titles to shame), now that I can easily summarise the main advantages of this title without too much detail. First, the visuals are simply dazzling. This is easily the best looking Wii U game yet, and all at a smooth 60 frames per second in single player mode - the result of which is motion that appears almost lifelike, and even more responsive to your input. Second, there is greater replay value. The driver can try to attain all the available Stamps, unlock able characters and vehicle parts that are otherwise hidden. Which leads onto the next feature... Customisable vehicles. It had to happen at some point and it just doesn't disappoint - the vehicle body, wheels and parachute each have an affect on performance, so you have a greater responsibility to not just build the best looking car! And what about the game's soundtrack? It's a real pleasure to crank up the volume now, especially since a good majority (but not all) of the course theme songs are live band recordings. This is a nice contrast to the synthesised/MIDI compositions of the past, which tended to drive one round the bend after a period of time... A revamped online lobby is also featured, but there is a glaring exception and it is one that will no doubt ruffle a few feathers. Arenas in Battle Mode are gone, with standard race tracks in their place. The consequences of this are quite mind-boggling and very unlike Nintendo, given the popularity of Battle Mode. One of the important features of an arena is that a driver can have a greater set of tactics; these are not linear environments, yet they have clear boundaries and obstacles that can't be replicated on a race track. The director of this game suggested that players "won't know when a rival will appear from around a corner, which will bring a new sense of excitement and strategy to this mode" - yet he has overlooked the fact that you can view the Map at any time. The likelihood is that the developers had a tight schedule and didn't have the time to implement the arenas. Perhaps they'll be available in a future content download... Never the less, Mario Kart 8 represents fun, clean video gaming at its finest. Race around a wide selection of fun, colourful, and imaginative tracks, choosing from a vast array of vehicles, wheels, parachutes, and characters (you can even play as your Mii that you've created on your Wii U console). As you race around the tracks you can collect 'prizes' that assist you in winning the races by disabling your opponents momentarily. the tracks range in difficulty so it's ideal for family members of all ages, and four players can race against each other at any one time. There are five categories of racing - firstly 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, and 200cc (super fast and very difficult!) which are simply different speeds of racing, and each time you complete a set of four races (known as a cup), achieving 1st in each race, you will unlock a new item/character to play with going forward. Lastly, there's the Mirror category, which allows you to race all the tracks the wrong way round - once you've been conditioned to learn the tracks, this is super hard to do! If you want to take a break from trying to unlock all the items and win every cup, you can switch to Online Mode and play against other Mario Kart 8 players across the globe - this is (in my opinion) by far the most fun thing about this game. As long as your Wii U is hooked up to a wifi connection, you can simply select the Online Mode from the home screen, choose your character and vehicle, and you'll be automatically entered into a 'room' with up to 12 players. Two players can play online mode together at any one time. You can also add your own friends if they have this game, and they can join you in a room any time you're online, or you can create a room solely to race against your friends! I regularly play this game with my six-year-old nephew, and he absolutely loves it, which shows just how versatile the game is with regards to age suitability. When playing online, players in a room are able to chat to each other, but only by using a selected few phrases already built into the game, such as "hello', "good game", "that was fun" etc. therefore ensuring online security and peace of mind for parents of your children playing this game.
