No child hates reading. If they turn away from it - generally it is because they can't decipher the code and understand how letters work to make words. He had almost no trouble deciding which letter came next, he did not need much help from me. It is good practise for him to string together phonics sounds into actual words. At school he follows the Read Write Inc. phonics teaching, and has just learnt his Set 1 sounds. The ‘next steps’ version of this game uses Set 2 and Set 3 sounds, which he hasn’t learnt yet, so I will wait a while before buying that so that he can learn the sounds in school first. The next thing I will do once he gets bored of making the words on the boards is just get him to use the letters to spell other words I give him, as he wanted some 5 letter words. Eventually I will probably buy some magnetic sticky tape and turn the letters into fridge magnets.
