The pet toilet is on my balcony and within 2 weeks of training my miniature dachshund now knows it is her spot. When the toilet arrived I let my puppy play on it indoors so she got used to it and would often just go and sit on it. I then started to place her on it each time I recognised that she needed to go to the toilet and would treat her within 2 seconds of going. We did this for 5 days indoors before moving the toilet to the balcony. Honestly, we have had fewer than 10 accidents in the apartment in 2 weeks. It does take consistency and you have to watch the puppy like a hawk in the early days but my pup very quickly caught on. Because I could take her to the pet toilet each time and because the urine does not sit on top of the grass (i.e. not constant cleaning up urine puddles on the floor) I found it easier to toilet train her as she recognised her scent on the "grass" and knew to return to this spot to pee. My puppy is fine with it in a pen. I use a paper training pad under the grass also and change once or twice daily. You can put cat litter in tray **Q: Would this be a good size for a pug?** A: Yes. I purchase one when my dog, a westie, was a very young puppy but he never learned to use it. He thought it was just a nice place for him to sit on. However, I would say that it is an ideal size for a dog of his stature. At the end of the day I would advise you to persevere in getting your dog to ask out when he needs to go. It will pay dividends in the long run. Indoor toilets should be only for emergency use. **Q: How do you clean the grass?** A: Our dog only wees on this and poos elsewhere, we just hose it down, spray disinfectant on, pour water on and empty the tray, it's easy - we trained our dog to use it inside as a new puppy and after a few weeks introduced it outside, it now stays outside and he goes out and wees on it out there, we only have a patio so it works well for us. When it was inside we had puppy pads under the grass to catch the wee - it was a lot easier to clean that way than emptying the tray and less smelly, we just changed the puppy pads every day. The grass comes off, would fit in a bucket of soapy water if you wanted to give it a good wash. Really glad we bought it! He's now a big Labrador and still fits on it, still uses it. We also bought the puppy train spray and sprayed it to tell him that's where he was to wee - worked a treat, didn't take long to train that way. Stiff and very plasticy. The surface is quite porous which is good cause wee goes down fast. Note. make sure you buy big enough for big puppies as they will have a hard time "target pooping" as its quite awkward for them. 3 month old huskamute would only wee on this as she find it too small and awkward to poop on.
