## Overview

The Airfix Starter Gift Set Westland Sea King HAR.3 is a 1:72 scale plastic model kit featuring 135 pieces and authentic RAF Search and Rescue yellow livery. Designed for intermediate modelers, it includes all necessary acrylic paints, glue, and brushes to complete a detailed 307mm long replica of the legendary British SAR helicopter. Produced by Airfix, a heritage brand since 1952, this kit offers a perfect blend of historical significance and hands-on craftsmanship.

## Description

The Westland Sea King was developed from the body of Sikorsky SH-3 and flew from 1969 and retired in 2018. It was a staple in the Royal Navy Search and Rescue as well as the helicopter in this kit the RAF Search and Rescue Force (SARF) easily identified by its bright yellow livery and served as long as the SARF operated until going under a privatized contract. Unlike the SH-3, the Sea King was developed to operate alone, originally produced for anti-submarine warfare, from these Sea Kings they were updated further to specifically be fitted for duty in Search & Rescue, renamed the Sea King HAR2 and entered service in 1978. The helicopter based RAF Search and Rescue Force was established in 1986, and updated to the HAR3 specifically for this purpose, providing aerial support over the United Kingdom, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands up until 2016. SARF was created as their was a lack of support for downed military aircrews that were ejected or crash-landed from their aircrafts, increasing their survival significantly. Their secondary operations were civilian related as they rescued distressed people from the sea, as well as the mountains and flooded regions.

It's a great model. I've been away from modelling for a while and found it quite taxing, but great fun nonetheless. The decals are very delicate, but again maybe that is just me not being used to the more modern ways. It comes with glue, paint and brushes. The brushes and paint are great. I used a liquid glue and discarded the one in the kit. Kept me busy for ages. Full marks.
