It has a variable speed dial labeled with letters rather than actual RPM, so I was looking to add a digital speed readout. This tachometer is reasonably priced and looked like it would do the job. The package arrived quickly and was easy to assemble, but required soldering three wires to connect the hall sensor to the three-pin connector. I wired up a 110 power cord and attached the magnet to the power take-off shaft, held the hall effect sensor close to the shaft and the RPM was immediately displayed. I also attached the magnet to the side of the chuck and the sensor still read the RPM. I will need to fashion a bracket to permanently mount the Hall sensor and the electronics. Installed it in the control cabinet and the sensor & magnet on the spindle pulley. I got the sensor about .060 inches from the magnet. Erratic readings, it jumps all over. adjusted sensor position multiple times, same result. erratic readings. Kind of works, but number jumps around too much to be useful. I'm buying an induction sensor to see if that works any better per another reviewer's success. (Taiss 2pcs LJ12A3-4-Z/AX Proximity Switch Inductive Proximity Sensor) So why 4 stars? Great support! Vendor provided refund for my second unit, I am now trying a third.
