It has a backflow filter that creates a barrier between the tubing and flanges. Since it is a closed system, you don't have to replace your tubing.. Unless you misplace them. But milk does get into the filter, so make sure you clean them. The filters are easily opened and closed, perfect for an easy cleaning. I recommend using babyganics foaming dish and bottle soap to clean the pump flanges, valves, bottles, and filters. It gets the residue off and rinses clean. I also use a skinny nipple cleaner (I buy the cheap babies r us brand skinny nipple cleaners) to get any gunk out of the part that connects the filter and breast pump (if you purchase it you'll see what I'm talking about). I also recommend boiling your parts or using a steam sterilizer bag to kill off any bacteria every other day or weekly. Also, if you ever lose your valves or rip them, and need to replace them ASAP the Medela valves and membranes are compatible with the spectra S1, S2, M1, and 9 breast pump flanges. If you decide to purchase this breastpump, first check with your insurance if you are eligible to receive a free breastpump covered by your insurance. I'm sorry if this is lengthy, just wanting to make this as clear as possible to understand. **Q: How many/what accessories would you recommend for a first time pumper who will be working an office job M-F, 8-530?** A: ALL you need are milk bags and a bag to carry it all in. It sounds crazy, but I pumped DIRECTLY into the bags! I really liked the Lansinoh brand milk bags and a Vera Bradley tote for carrying everything. There's also no need to refrigerate fresh milk for up to 9 hours, as long as it is kept at room temperature. So I just put it in the VB bag, rinsed out the shields and attachments before and after using and stored them in the bag between pumpings. I washed the parts thoroughly every night and refrigerated the milk as soon as I got home. It was never unrefrigerated for more than 7 hours. Storing everything in the bag, including the milk, ensured that I would never leave work and forget my milk! I pumped for 3 years total for three kids, so I have tried all of the pumps and accessories and methods. This is the best pump and the easiest way to do it! **Q: Could you please tell me what all comes with this specific pump? Is everything included to use as a double pump?** A: Everything you need to use as a double pump is included (two tubes, two back-flow valves, two breast shields, two valves, two bottles, and two caps for the bottles - I think nipples for the bottles, too, but I've never used those). The only downfall is the availability of accessories - you have to buy full kits from Spectra instead of just the parts you need, otherwise you have to buy aftermarket - which work ok in my opinion, but I'm OCD and I prefer OEM parts. Lastly - Spectra Customer Service. They're AMAZING. As far as I am able to tell, customer service is run by breastfeeding mothers - which is what we need! They do great Q&A sessions on Facebook, and they'll happily help you with getting covered by insurance. From what I understand they're expanding this year to reintroduce the s9, and to be more available at local retailers (accessories included). Bottom line is, this pump in my opinion is worth every penny and then some. Even my husband, who as I said was apprehensive and is what you might call "tight with money" is happy about this purchase.
