You can purchase collections of different woods. But that can get pricey. If you have access to pinon, hickory, apple, etc, you can shave it into slivers and small pieces that will burn properly in the space provided. **Q: Does it need a special cover or can you just place a bowl over it?** A: We used a bowl to smoke some pork and also foil both worked equally well.
