We mix them up, placing 4 of each bait in each bait station, two rods with the Peanut Butter on the Bottom and Apple on the Top, and two rods reversed. Not sure if it helps, but the rats disappeared pretty darn fast and stay gone as long as I remember to check and refill the bait stations. Additionally, these baits have what's known as a first generation rodenticide which while effective on rats , etc., have less risk to birds and larger animals that may eat a rat that has partaken of the poison bait. You don't need to kill squirrels though. I found them to be slightly cheaper and slightly larger than the competition, which is nice. They use the "bait chunks" which you have to buy separately, but I have a good stable of these stations now and have reused them extensively. They are a little tricky to open with the key, but not impossibly so.
