The book tells the story of a young Irish girl who became a orphan after a terrible fire kills her family in the early 1900s. She rides the Orphan Train and is placed with a family and forced to work for them. Fast forward to present day, she tells her story to a young girl in foster care. The book switches back and forth between time periods, but it is done very well. There is never a confusion about what time period one is currently reading about. It just flowed perfectly.
