Need to be sure that you are using a spinning rod and not a casting rod. The difference is spinning rods have bigger eyes at the reel end and they get smaller as they go towards the tip. Bait casting rods have small eyes all the way down. Are you flipping the bell ? If you have all of this correct then apparently there is a problem with the reel. I love mine and I use it for surf fishing. I cast mine 200 feet with a 4 ounce weight and leader easy **Q: So are the bearings double sealed or shielded?** A: I don't know... I didn't disect them...
